Happy Loving Day! It was 50 years ago today that the Supreme Court ruled on the wonderfully titled case of Loving v. Virginia, overturning the state’s attempt to preserve traditional marriage as God intended.
And no, I’m not stretching the truth there. The Virginia ruling that upheld the ban specifically cited God’s intentions as a reason for outlawing marriage between people of different races:
“Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix.”
